Gramscian : An adjective describing a perspective on international relations influenced by the work of Italian socialist and union organizer, Antonio Gramscian (1891-1937). Gramscian was a Marxist who cautioned against overemphasizing the economic 'base' of society. lie argued that the 'superstructure' of society, which includes schools, churches and civil society more generally, also played a vital part in the reproduction of capitalist societies and in their possible transformation. In international relations his work has been adapted to focus on the way ideas and states interact to maintain dominant world orders
