Greenhouse Effect 04 :
A warming of the atmosphere that resembles the effect of a greenhouse. The short-wave radiation from the sun penetrates the atmosphere and reaches the earth with relatively little hinderance. The heated earth radiates in the long-wave range (infrared). Trace substances in the atmosphere, primarily water vapour and carbon dioxide, absorb this radiation and send long-wave radiation back to the surface of the earth, which heats up even further as a result. A distinction is made between the natural greenhouse effect and the anthropogenic (manmade) greenhouse effect. Without water vapour and other greenhouse gases the mean surface temperature on earth would be 18°C instead of +14°C
