Greenhouse Effect 08 : The common name for designating several radiative processes where specific atmospheric molecules (such as water vapor and carbon dioxide) allow most of the solar radiation to pass through the atmosphere to the surface, while most of the infrared radiation emitted by the surface is absorbed by the atmosphere and re-emitted both downward and upward. The downward re-radiation warms the surface, while the upward component is lost to space or absorbed higher up in the atmosphere
