Guimet

Guimet :

A process for making ultramarine, a blue pigment. A mixture of clay, sodium carbonate, and sulfur is heated in the absence of air, and then slowly cooled while air is admitted over a long period. Invented in 1826, independently, in France by J. B. Guimet, and in Germany by C. B. Gmelin. Guimet won a prize for this invention. It changed the world’s pigment industry and was soon operating in 22 European factories. Guimet’s son Émile, who inherited the business, collected Asian art and founded the Musée Guimet, now in Paris
