Heat 01 : (n.) (1-a) A form of energy that is transferred by a difference in temperature. Syn: Heat Energy. Type of: Energy, Free Energy: (physics) A thermodynamic quantity equivalent to the capacity of a physical system to do work; the units of energy are joules or ergs. (1-b) The sensation caused by heat energy. Syn: Warmth. Type of: Temperature: The somatic sensation of cold or heat. (1-c) The presence of heat. Syn: High Temperature, Hotness. Ant: Cold, Coldness, Frigidity, Frigidness, Low Temperature. (1-d) Utility to warm a building. Syn: Heating, Heating Plant, Heating System. Type of: Utility: A facility composed of one or more pieces of equipment connected to or part of a structure and designed to provide a service such as heat or electricity or water or sewage disposal. (v.) Make hot or hotter. Syn: Heat Up. Ant: Chill, Cool, Cool Down: Make cool or cooler. Ten Types: (1) Crisp, Crispen, Toast: Make brown and crisp by heating. (2) Scald: Heat to the boiling point. (3) Soak: Heat a metal prior to working it. (4) Calcine: Heat a substance so that it oxidizes or reduces. (5) Preheat: Heat beforehand. (6) Overheat: Make excessively or undesirably hot. (7) Scorch, Sear: Make very hot and dry. (8) Bake, Broil: Heat by a natural force. (9) Reheat: Heat again. (10) Sizzle: Burn or sear with a sizzling sound. Type of: Alter, Change, Modify: Cause to change; make different; cause a transformation.
