Hexachloroethane Smoke : Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. The toxicity of hexachloroethane (HCE) (referred to as HC smoke) is attributed to the production of zinc chloride. HC smoke is produced by burning a mixture containing roughly equal parts of hexachloroethane and zinc oxide. The U.S. military uses HC smoke in a wide variety of munitions. It is used in smoke pots and smoke grenades to generate a screening effect
