Hitch 2 : (1) One of a variety of methods of securing objects with rope, as a chimney hitch, clove hitch, etc. (2) To make a hitch around a hydrant with hose or with a short rope so that the hose will not pull away when the apparatus proceeds toward the fire. (3) A period of duty. (4) Formerly, a method of harnessing fire horses, as a "three-horse hitch"
