Homestead :
A historic unit of area in the United States, equal to 160 acres (64.75 hectares). Under the Homestead Act passed by Congress in 1862, settlers in the western states were allowed to take title to a homestead of 160 acres of land by registering a claim, settling on the land, and cultivating it. A homestead equals 1/4 square mile, or 1/4 section in U.S. government terminology
