Human Resources Management/(HRM) : The management function performed in organizations, which seeks to facilitate the most effective use of people (employees) to achieve organizational and individual goals. It is concerned with the effective management of people at work; examining what can or should be done to make people both more productive and more satisfied with their working life. Some of the activities inherent in the HRM function are: (a) Job analysis; (b) Human resources planning; (c) Employee recruitment, selection and orientation; (d) Career development and counselling; (e) Performance evaluation; (f) Training and development; (g) Compensation and benefits; (h) Safety and health; (i) Industrial relations; (j) Discipline; (k) Work scheduling; John M. Ivancevich and William F. Glueck in "Foundations of Personnel/ Human Resource Management (1986), identify the following goals of HRM: Helping the organization to reach its goals; Employing the skills and abilities of the work force efficiently; Providing the organization with well-trained and well- motivated employees; Increasing the employee's job satisfaction and self- actualization to the fullest; Developing and maintaining a quality of work life that makes employment in the organization a desirable personal and social situation; Communicating HRM policies to all employees; Helping to maintain ethical policies and behaviour; and Managing change to the mutual advantage of individuals, groups, the organization, and the public
