Hydroprocessing

Hydroprocessing : A general term for a family of petrochemical processes including hydrotreating, hydrorefining, and hydrocracking. They are all heterogeneous catalytic processes for removing sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds from crude oil fractions and they may or may not induce cracking. Oil and Gas Journal classifies these processes according to the amount of cracking induced. Hydrotreating induces no cracking; hydrorefining converts approximately 10 percent of the feed to lower molecular weight products; and hydrocracking converts approximately 50 percent to lower molecular weight products
