Amyl acetate 2 : CH3COO(CH2)4CH3. A colourless liquid smelling strongly of peardrops. Lighter than water, heavier than air. Slightly soluble in water. Flammable. Explosive. It is used widely as a solvent in the lacquer and paint industry, in the purification of penicillin and in the perfumery and confectionery trades. It has a very low explosive limit coupled with wide explosive range. Breathing apparatus may be necessary when firefighting. Water in the form of sprays to effect rapid cooling. Carbon dioxide or vaporising liquid to extinguish the fire. A high concentration has a narcotic effect and may produce headaches and sickness. Remove to fresh air and keep warm
