Island Arc

Island Arc : Island chains which represent segments of an arc and are generally convex outward from the continental areas and are part of the major globe-encircling active orogenic belt systems. A single island arc consists of a single chain of volcanic islands. With further tectonic development, double island arcs may be formed. These consist of an outer arc of sedimentary islands and a parallel inner arc of volcanic islands. Most of the single island arcs contain submerged or scattered traces of a second line. Certain single and double island arcs exhibit large transcurrent (or strike-slip) fault zones which suppress the ideal arcuate pattern. These island arcs are called fractured island arcs
