ISM Code 4 : The ISM Code (International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention) become international law on July 1, 1998 for certain categories of vessels: Passenger ships, oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers and high speed cargo craft of 500 gross tonnage and over. Other cargo vessels and mobile offshore drilling units of 500 gross tonnage and over will be required to comply with the ISM Code by July 1, 2002
