Anesthesia 1 : (Med) Loss of sensation; in particular, the temporary loss of feeling induced by certain chemical agents. The effect may be local, affecting a particular region of the body, or general, if total unconsciousness results. A major part of the body may be rendered insensitive by a spinal block, or the area supplied by a nerve can be anesthetized by local injection of an agent such as procaine in a nerve block. Hypnosis is used to inhibit pain, particularly in childbirth and dentistry
