Anesthetic 2 : (Med) A substance used to reduce sensitivity to pain. It may be either local, affecting a particular region of the body, or general, if total unconsciousness results. Anesthetics can be administered orally (e. g. , codeine), by inhalation (ether, Halothane, cyclopropane), by injection (sodium pentathol), or topically, on the surface (methyl chloride). Note: Most of the common anesthetics are highly flammable and have been a source of hospital explosions and fires
