Jettison 02 : A marine insurance term used when referring to the voluntary sacrifice of cargo or ship's equipment in order to lighten the ship with the sole object of saving her and the remainder of the cargo. All loss which is suffered in this way is borne proportionately by all who are interested and claims settled under General Average. When such items sink and are buoyed or marked or their position fixed by "bearings" with a view to their subsequent recovery, the term "lagan" is applied to them
