Katasulf

Katasulf :

A process for removing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia from coke-oven gas, developed by IG Farbenindustrie in Germany in the 1920s. The basic reaction involved is the catalyzed oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfur dioxide and water at approximately 4200C: H2S + O2 = H2O + SO2 Various catalysts have been used, including activated carbon, bauxite, and bimetallic oxides. The sulfur dioxide is then absorbed in a solution of ammonium sulfite and bisulfite; acidulation of this yields ammonium sulfate and elemental sulfur. (Check source for accuracy of chemical formula)
