Life Line 1 : (Fire Pr) (1) a. A rope secured to a firefighter and leading to a safe exit, used to enable a firefighter to find his way out of a smoke-filled building. Syn: guide line; escape line. b. A rope, usually attached to a belt and secured to a structure to prevent or limit the fall of a person working aloft. c. A hand rope, usually with an eye spliced at one end, used in fire-department rescue work. See: Line. (2) (Brit) A 150- to 220-foot rope used in rescue work with turntable ladders
