Lighterage 6 : Transportation of cargo between an ocean-going vessel and the pier by a smaller vessel called a lighter or barge. A lighter is used when the water is not deep enough for the ocean-going vessel to lie alongside the pier or wharf, or when the discharge facilities of the port are so congested that lighterage is more efficient
