Limiting Oxygen Index 5 : The lowest oxygen concentration in an oxygen-nitrogen mixture, expressed in percent, that will support the combustion of a fuel specimen. It is measured in a specific apparatus with a defined orientation of sample. The index, used to rate the flammability of plastics, is defined as I = 02/(O2 + N,), where I is the index and 02 and N2 are the concentrations of oxygen and nitrogen, respectively, in consistent units.
