Line 01 : ((1)) (Fire Pr) One or more lengths of connected hose; A fire line. ((2)) A length of rope. Note: Rope is used extensively in the fire service for a variety of purposes: (1) belt line = pocket line (See: Pouch Line, Below). (2) Bobbin Line: A line wound on a bobbin and carried in a pouch on a hook belt and used for hauling small gear or as a guy or guide line. Cf: Pouch Line. (3) escape line: a) (Brit) A 15- to 20-foot rope secured to the top round of an escape or extension ladder. b) (US) (1) A light line used to assist firefighters in finding their way back from smoke-filled rooms. (2) A line used to secure the heel of a first-floor ladder when it is used to extend the height or to secure the head of an extension ladder. (4) grass line: A line made of coir and used as an endless whip on fireboats. (5) ground control line: A line used to control a turntable ladder and monitor from ground level. (6) guide line: A rope of up to 300 feet in length used to guide men in and out of buildings when breathing apparatus is worn. (7) guy line: (a) usually a rope 130 feet long attached to a turn-table ladder to stabilize it in a high wind. (b) A line bent on another line to keep an object that is being lowered clear of obstructions on its way down. (8) long line: A 100-foot, 2-inch manila line. (9) lowering line: A two-inch, 130-foot line of Italian hemp or terylene, with two legs spliced at one end with a running noose, used for rescue work. (10) personal line: A 20-foot line secured to a man at one end and fitted with a snap hook at the other, used for hooking on to a guide line when breathing apparatus is worn. (11) pocket line; pouch line - Similar to a bobbin line, but made up on a special former. Carried in a pocket, it is used to lash branches, etc. When carried on the belt is is called a belt line. (12) rescue line: A special, two-inch rope, usually 220 feet long, used for rescue work with turntable ladders. (13) short line: A 50-foot, two-inch rope. (14) tail line: A line of up to 20-feet permanently attached to a turntable ladder rescue sling and used to prevent a person being lowered from swinging when the turntable ladder is trained away from a building.
