Lithostatic Stress 1

Lithostatic Stress 1 :

There are two variations on the usage of this term. One usage, also called the "lithostatic load" or "lithostatic pressure", gives the vertical normal stress as a function of depth due to the gravitational force of the overlying rock column. Another usage, the "lithostatic stress state", combines the "lithostatic load" with assumptions about the strain history and rheology of the rock column to produce the complete stress tensor.
