Locked Fault 3


Locked Fault 3 : A fault that is not slipping because frictional resistance on the fault is greater than the shear stress across the fault. Such faults may store strain for extended periods, which is eventually released in an earthquake when frictional resistance is overcome. In contrast, a fault segment which slips sometimes without the occurance of an earthquake is called creeping segment. See creep events
