Logarithm 1

Logarithm 1 : (Math; Symb: log or 1n) The power to which a base must be raised to give a desired number. For example, if the base is ten, the logarithm of 100 is 2; i. e. , 102 = 100. Logarithms can be used to multiply numbers by addition, to divide by subtraction, and to ex-tract roots by division. A logarithm is usually given as a whole number, called the characteristic, plus a decimal fraction, called the mantissa. Tables of logarithms are avail-able to six or more significant figures so that any required accuracy may be obtained in numerical calculations. Note: Two systems of logarithms are in general use: common (also called briggs logarithms) and natural (also called napierian or hyperbolic). Common logarithms have the base 10, and the notation for the logarithm of a number N is log N. Natural logarithms have the base e = (2) 71828, and the usual notation, esp in scientific work, is in N
