Menstruum :

Also known as the McKenna process. A process for making the carbides of niobium and tantalum from their respective oxides. The oxide is reduced by heating to 2,000ºC with aluminum in a graphite vessel. Graphite lumps are then added and the heating continued. After cooling, the excess of aluminum and aluminum carbide is dissolved out with hydrochloric acid. Graphite is removed by flotation, leaving the crystalline carbide
