Quicksilver, a metallic element which is liquid at ordinary temperatures and pressures. Melting point is -39ºC, boiling point 357ºC, density 13. 6 gm/cm3. It is commonly used for filling thermometers, and because of its high density, for filling barometers, atmospheric pressure can be measured in terms of the height of a column of mercury which exerts an equal pressure
