Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) : Every urban area with a population greater than 50,000 has an MPO--sometimes called a Council of Governments--to plan for transportation and other developments across city and county boundaries. MPOs are given stronger powers under ISTEA, especially in areas with a population greater than 200,000. In northeastern Illinois the MPO is the Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS)
