(ICT) Also referred to as Chip or Silicon Chip. Invented in 1958 by Jack St. Clair Kilby, while he was working at Texas Instruments, Dallas, Texas: http://www.ti.com/corp/docs/kilbyctr/jackstclair.shtml. An electronic circuit etched on to a small piece of silicon which has been subjected, using photo-masking processes, to controlled "doping" with certain impurities. Particular areas of the chip can then be made to act like electronic components such as diodes, capacitors and resistors. See: Integrated Circuit
