Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA)

Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) : Radiation and Radiological Disasters. The radioactivity which, if present in a sample, produces a counting rate that will be detected (i.e. considered to be above background) with a certain level of confidence. The 'certain level of confidence' is normally set at 95%, i.e. a sample containing exactly the MDA will, as a result of random fluctuations, be taken to be free of radioactivity 5% of the time. The MDA is sometimes referred to as the detection limit or lower limit of detection. The counting rate from a sample containing the MDA is termed the determination level
