Minimum Significant Activity (MSA)

Minimum Significant Activity (MSA) : The radioactivity which, if present in a sample, produces a counting rate that can be reliably distinguished from background with a certain level of confidence. A sample containing exactly the MSA will, as a result of random fluctuations, be taken to be free of radioactivity 50% of the time, whereas a true background sample will be taken to be free of radioactivity 95% of the time. The MSA is sometimes referred to as the decision limit. The counting rate from a sample containing the MSA is termed the critical level
