This type of bias can occur when there is error in classifying subjects by disease or risk factor that tends to distort associations between disease and risk factors. The effect of misclassification with respect to exposure or disease is dependent on the individual's disease or exposure status. When the misclassification is random or nondifferential, the proportions of subjects erroneously classified in the study groups are approximately equal.
