Moment Magnitude (Mw)

Moment Magnitude (Mw) : Natural Disaster. A non-saturing magnitude computed using the scalar seismic moment (MO). It was introduced by Kanamori (1977) via the Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-energy relation. See Chapter 3 in this Manual and Bormann and Di Giacomo (2011) for details, also with respect to the relationship of Mw to the energy magnitude Me and the problem of saturation (of magnitude scales)
