MSDS - What is it, and why it is needed? 01 :

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that provides detailed information about the hazards of a chemical substance or mixture for persons handling these products. MSDSs are vitally important to communicate information on the safe use, handling, cleanup, and transporation of hazardous materials to anyone who works with or may be exposed to such hazardous materials. The US Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) "requires chemical manufacturers or importers to assess the hazards of chemicals which they produce or import, and all employers to provide information to their employees about the hazardous chemicals to which they are exposed, by means of a hazard communication program, labels and other forms of warning, material safety data sheets, and information and training". In Canada, "Section 13 of the Hazardous Products Act (HPA) places a legal requirement on the Canadian supplier of a WHMIS controlled product 'intended for use in a work place in Canada' to transmit a MSDS disclosing prescribed information as a condition of sale". European Union Commission Directive 91/155/EEC of 5 March 1991 requires that "Any person established within the Community who is responsible for placing a dangerous substance or preparation on the market, whether the manufacturer, importer or distributor, shall supply the recipient who is an industrial user of the substance or preparation with a safety data sheet...". In Australia, The National Model Regulations for the Control of Workplace Hazardous Substances [NOHSC:1005(1994)] requires that "...manufacturers and importers shall: (a) produce MSDS for all hazardous substances which they supply;...". In Japan, according to the Guidelines for the Necessary Measures to Prevent Health Impairments to Workers Due to Chemical Substances, Etc. (2000), "...any party who is an Employer, and who transfers or otherwise provides Items Subject to Notification, is to have a person who is properly qualified with the required knowledge to prepare safety data sheets for Chemical Substances...". MSDSs produced for a wide variety of industries such as Adhesives, Asphalts, Cleaning Products, Compressed Gases, Electronic Etching Products, Experimental Chemicals/Chemical Precusors (Non-TSCA Listed Chemicals), Medical Diagnostic Products and Kits, Mineral Products, Petroleum/Lubricant Products, Pharmaceuticals, Pigments and Inks, Polymers, Printing & Etching Solutions, Specialty Chemicals, Welding Products, etc
