Apparent Stress

Apparent Stress : Defined by Wyss and Brune (1968) as the product of the rigidity and the ratio of the seismic energy to the seismic moment for an earthquake. It is the fictitious stress (radiation resistance) which acting through the actual earthquake slip would do the work equivalent to the seismic energy radiated in the faulting. More simply, it is the product of the seismic efficiency and the average absolute stress as explained in Aki and Richards (2002 or 2009, p. 55). See also: Chapter 3
