Apparent Velocity 2 : If T (in s) and D (in km) denote the travel times and epicentral distances, respectively for a seismic phase arriving at points of the Earth's surface, then the apparent velocity v app is defined as dD/dT. The apparent velocity is for a spherical Earth model the reciprocal of the seismic ray parameter p or more general the reciprocal of the horizontal (radial) component s R of the Slowness vector s (see Chapters 2 and Chapter 9 of this Manual)
