National Defense Strategy (NDS) :
"The NDS supports the NSS [National Security Strategy] by establishing a set of overarching defense objectives that guide the Department's security activities and provide direction for the National Military Strategy. The NDS objectives serve as links between military activities and those of other government agencies in pursuit of national goals. The Department must take action to secure the United States from direct attack and counter, at a safe distance, those who seek to harm the country". (DOD/JCS, NMS, 2004, 1)
