NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) 1 : A military alliance formed in 1949 by Western European and Northern American countries aligned against the USSR during the Cold War. Unlike the Warsaw Pact, it did not die with the end of the Cold War. Instead, it expanded by absorbing former Warsaw Pact countries into its membership.
