Natural Hazard, Natural Peril (Insurance Term) : A natural phenomenon that can lead to the population, the environment, material assets, and income being threatened. The most important hazards are: earthquake, volcanic eruption, mass movement (including landslide, debris flow, lahar, avalanche), subsidence, windstorm (including tropical cyclone, extratropical winter storm, tornado, sandstorm, blizzard), lightning stroke, extreme precipitation (e.g. torrential rain, snowfall, hail), flood (including river flood, fash flood), storm surge, tsunami, frost, drought, forest fire, pests. Natural hazards can be classified by origin in geological, hydrometeorological or biological hazards (ISDR, 2002).
