Nervous System 1 : (Anat) A complex system of receptors and effectors interconnected by nerves in the body. Environmental changes stimulate responses in the receptors, which transmit excitations through the nerves to the effectors, which in turn act to adapt the organism to the changes in the environment detected by the receptors. Note: The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, the various sense organs, and numerous subsystems of nerves.
