Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. A strong mineral acid, HNO3, colorless in pure form, fp -470C. A strong oxidizer, the acid reacts with most metals. Hot, concentrated nitric acid oxidizes carbon to CO2, sulfur to sulfuric acid, and phosphorus to phosphoric acid. Note: Nitric acid and ammonium chloride or hydrochloric acid (which yields chlorine in reaction with nitric acid) dissolve gold and even platinum. A mixture of 1:4 nitric and hydrochloric acids is called aqua regia (royal water) because of its ability to dissolve noble metals. Nitric acid was once called aqua fortis (strong water)
