Normal Stress 1
Normal Stress 1 : Force per unit area exerted upon an infinitesimal area in the direction of the normal to that area. In most disciplines, tension across the area is reckoned positive; but in geology, the opposite convention may be used. See also shear stress, Ruff (2002), and Figure 1 in Ben-Zion (2003)
