Ascorbic Acid 1

Ascorbic Acid 1 :

Medicine. Chemical term for vitamin C, water-soluble, white crystalline vitamin present in citrus fruits, tomatoes, berries, potatoes and fresh, green leafy vegetables. Essential for the formation of collagen and fibrous tissue for normal intercellular matrices in teeth, bone, cartilage, connective tissue and skin, and for the structural integrity of capillary walls. Aids in fighting bacterial infections and interacts with other nutrients. High dietary Ascorbic Acid intake appears to protect against gastric cancer. This may be due to its action as a scavenger of reactive radical species formed in the gastric mucosa, resulting in a reduced level of radical-mediated DNA damage
