Nuclear or Radiological Terrorism, Rapid Response to 08 : (3) Patient Management: The management of patients following suspected or confirmed radiological events involving mass casualties must be well organized and rehearsed. Patient management includes determining the signs and symptoms of acute radiation exposure, determining the extent the patient may be contaminated, providing for decontamination when necessary, treating specific injuries, collecting specimens for laboratory testing, providing care for special populations (e.g., pregnant women), providing discharge information, follow-up care, and post-mortem procedures, and addressing the psychological effects of patients and their mental health concerns. The psychological trauma in a radiological incident may be as varied in severity and type as physical trauma and will require special skills and training to adequately meet the needs of those affected
