Octane Number 1

Octane Number 1 : (Techn) A measure of the antiknock quality of gasoline, determined by comparing the detonation of a gasoline sample with that of a mixture of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (often called isooctane), rated at 100, and normal heptane, rated at 0. Hence, the percentage of isooctane by volume in the matching mixture is the octane number of the gasoline being tested. Also called: Octane Rating. Cf: Cetane Number
