Open Sides and Ends 2 : The edges of a scaffold platform that exceed the maximum allowable horizontal distance away from a sturdy, continuous vertical surface (such as a building wall) or a sturdy, continuous surface (such as a floor); this is normally a distance of 14 to 18 in. (356 to 457 mm), but may be greater or lesser depending upon the type of work to be performed on the platform and the particular safety standard under which the work is being performed
