Oxides 1

Oxides 1 : Compounds of oxygen with another element. Oxides are formed by the combination of oxygen with most other elements, particularly at elevated temperatures, except for the noble gases and some of the noble metals. They may be divided into four classes: (1) acidic oxides, mainly oxides of non-metals, e. g. SO2, P2O5, CO2; (2) basic oxides, mainly oxides of metals, e. g. CuO, PbO, Fe2O3; (3) Peroxides, mainly oxides of metals containing more oxygen than the usual oxides, e. g. PbO2, BaO2, Na202; (4) Neutral oxides comprising CO, N20, H2O
