Paraffin 1


Paraffin 1 : (1) (Chem) The class of saturated hydrocarbons, including methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6) propane (C3H10), n-butane (C4H10) components of gasoline, kerosine, and various lubricating and fuel oils. The lower paraffins are gases, those up to n-hexade- cane (C16H34) are liquids, and those with more than 16 carbon atoms are waxy solids at room temperature. Note: Paraffins are straight or branched chain hydrocarbon molecules with the carbon atoms attached to each other by single bonds (saturated). Generalized formula: C (n) H (2n+ 2). Also called: Paraffin Series. (2) (Brit) = kerosine
