A type of eruption named after the 1902 eruption of Montagne Pelée, Martinique, is associated with relatively viscous magmas (e.g., andesitic to rhyolitic compositions). The most violent and destructive activity generally occurs early in the eruption and commonly involves nuées ardentes, followed by emplacement of lava domes and thick lava flows
