Pendulum (Gravitational) 1 : A classic instrument first studied by Galileo and Newton, a structure without springs, in which the line between the rotation axis (in the original, a fixed point) and the center of mass oscillates with dampened simple harmonic motion (in the linear approximation) about the direction of the local gravitational field of the Earth. Its equilibrium orientation is the plumb line. See Fig. 5.5 in Chapter 5 of this Manual
